Task 2
In 1835, Madame Tussauds’ exhibition established a permanent base in
London as the Baker Street Bazaar. The attraction moved to its present site in
Marylebone Road come 1884.
The Museum suffered from a fire in 1925.
It started an overseas expansion in 1970, when it opened a branch
location in Amsterdam. Now it has its
branches in Hollywood, Las Vegas,
New York, Washington D.C., Berlin,
Blackpool, Vienna, Bangkok,
Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai,
Busan and Sydney.
Task 3
It’s half past eight.
It is the Clock Tower of Westminster.
The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower) was renamed (in
2012, September, 11th) in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her
Diamond Jubilee year.
The tower was completed in 1843-1858.
The tower is 96-metre high (316 ft).
There are 5 bells inside it.
The largest one is called Big Ben. The bell was named in honour of Sir
Benjamin Hall, and his name is inscribed on it. However, another theory for the
origin of the name is that the bell may have been named after a contemporary
heavyweight boxer Benjamin Caunt .
The “Big Ben” clock weighs 13.7 tons.
Task 4
The London Eye was designed by architects Frank Anatole, Nic Bailey,
Steve Chilton, Malcolm Cook, Mark Sparrowhawk, and the husband-and-wife team of
Julia Barfield and David Marks.
They submitted their idea for a large observation wheel as part of a
competition to design a landmark for the new millennium.
It was inaugurated on the 31st of December, 1999; opened for
public on the 9th of March, 2000
The London Eye stands at the
western end of Jubilee Garden, on the South Bank of the river Thames, between
Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge.
Each of the 32 ovoidal capsules weighs 10 tonnes and can carry 25 people.
It can lift you up like nothing
else. You can see beautiful views view from there. Here is a view of the Houses
of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster.
Task 5
Buckingham Palace
The original building was constructed as a countryhouse in 1705 by the
duke of Buckingham, John Sheffield.
King George III bought the house in 1762 for his wife (Queen Charlotte )
and had it altered by William Chambers.
Queen Victoria was the first to reside in the palace.
The Changing of the Guard takes place daily in front of Buckingham
Palace.
The participants of the ceremony wear red jackets and tall, furry hats
called bearskins. The 18-inch-tall (45.7cm) bearskins worn by the Foot Guards
are made of real bearskin from Canadian brown bears and weigh 1.5lbs. The
bearskins were first worn by British soldiers in 1815, following the defeat of
Napoleon's French Imperial Guards at the battle of Waterloo. The French
grenadiers wore bearskins to appear taller and more intimidating, and Britain
adopted the towering hats for soldiers in ceremonial duties and guarding royal
residencies as a symbol of its victory.
Right in front of the building is the Queen Victoria Memorial, designed
by Sir Aston Webb and built in 1911 in honor of Queen Victoria, who reigned for
almost 64 years.
